On any given day you can see the cruise ships docked in port with another group of tourists on a Caribbean vacation. It has been rated one of the top 10 most beautiful cities in the world. But travel in these few photos to the neighborhood of El Pozon, in Southeastern Cartagena. It is just a few minutes’ drive from Bocagrande, the luxurious tourist’s attraction and la ciudad antigua, (Old Cartagena) that draws scores of visitors from around the world.

The location is Isla de Leon, a piece of land that is surrounded by a polluted canal. Squatters have taken over land there, illegally building shanties out of whatever materials they can squander. During the rain season, Isla de Leon floods, swamping many homes and forcing others to flee. Nature leaves it’s signature on the faces of the homes, and a life most difficult leaves its impressions on the faces of the people…
